A two-week celebration of walking is set to begin in South Kesteven, as the South Kesteven Walking Festival kicks off this Saturday, April 11. Organised by South Kesteven District Council, the festival runs until Sunday, April 26, featuring over 40 guided walks led by local community groups and organisations. According to LincsOnline - Stamford News, the festival promises a variety of routes catering to all abilities, from short, family-friendly strolls to longer, more challenging hikes through the beautiful local countryside.

The festival's opening weekend offers a blend of unique events. On Saturday, April 11, families can enjoy a walking theatre show titled "Robin Hoodie" at Witham Meadows in Long Bennington. This free production invites audiences to follow a captivating story inspired by Robin Hood. However, tickets for this event have already sold out, reflecting the community's enthusiasm.

On Sunday, April 12, walkers can join a free 4.5-mile moderate trek starting from the Tesco car park in Bourne. This walk, entitled "Discover Car Dyke - Bourne’s Hidden Heritage Asset," will delve into the history of the Roman canal and the local wildlife. The event is organised by the Bourne Neighbourhood Plan Group with support from the Aveland History Group, but participants must book in advance.

Later that same day, at 2pm, Allington Manor will host another walking theatre show, this time featuring an adaptation of Shakespeare’s "The Tempest". Tickets for this enchanting experience are priced at £5 and include tea and coffee for attendees.

The following weekend, on Saturday, April 18, several exciting walks will take place. Starting at 10am from Market Deeping Town Hall, the Market Deeping Town and Country Heritage Walk is a free, easy five-mile circular route, making it suitable for families, dog walkers, and those with pushchairs or wheelchairs. Participants are encouraged to book ahead to secure their spots.

Also on April 18, Alison and Ali will lead a gentle stroll from the Village Hall in Aslackby, exploring local history linked to the Knights Templars and other historical sites. A £5 donation is suggested upon arrival, and booking is required for this event as well.

Families looking for a fun outing can participate in the Bourne Time Traveller Walk at Wellhead Park, where a resident time traveller from Rhubarb Theatre will share stories from Bourne's rich past. This free event also requires booking in advance.

As the festival progresses, on Thursday, April 23, a Meditation and Mindfulness Walk will take place in Bourne Woods, focusing on stress reduction and reconnecting with nature. Led by mindfulness practitioner Stuart Couling, this free event has limited availability and requires prior booking.

Finally, the festival will culminate on Sunday, April 26, with a Welland Canal and River Walk led by the Deepings River Action Group, starting outside The Bull Public House in Market Deeping. This event is an excellent opportunity to explore the local waterways and appreciate the natural beauty of the area.

The South Kesteven Walking Festival not only promotes physical activity but also encourages residents to engage with their local history and surroundings. With such a diverse range of activities, it’s a perfect chance for families and individuals to get outdoors and enjoy the beauty of South Kesteven.
