This month, Lincolnshire is stepping into spring with a delightful array of walking events as part of the inaugural South Kesteven Walking Festival. Kicking off on Saturday and running through most of April, this festival promises to showcase the stunning landscapes and vibrant community groups that make the district so special. According to Paul Stokes, the cabinet member for leisure at South Kesteven District Council, the festival aims to bring together various walks under one banner, creating an exciting opportunity for locals and visitors alike to explore the area.
The council invited local groups to contribute their own organized walks, resulting in a diverse program that caters to all interests. Many of the walks are free and do not require prior booking, making it easy for families and individuals to join in. Among the highlights are the Deeping St James Parish Walk on April 12 at Deepings Lakes Nature Reserve, and the Walk on the Wildland on April 14 at Boothby Lodge.
For those who prefer a guided experience, there are also several walks that do require booking. These include the Market Deeping Town & Country Heritage Walk and the Aveland History Group Walk, both taking place on April 18. Participants can also look forward to unique experiences like the Meditation and Mindfulness Walk on April 23 at Bourne Woods, which promises a serene escape into nature.
Some of the more popular events have already reached full capacity, such as the guided military history tour around Londonthorpe and Bellmount, and a scenic sunset walk near Belton House. The National Trust's Belton House is actively participating in the festival, offering a variety of walks including a dog walk, an architecture tour, and a discussion on Influential Women of Belton. Visitors joining these walks will enjoy free entry to the estate on the day, adding extra value to their experience.
Charlotte Beaver, the visitor experience manager at Belton Estate, expressed enthusiasm about the festival, stating that their regular walks program is already fantastic and varied. The Guildhall Arts Centre is also getting in on the action, presenting a walking theatre show in Allington as part of the festival's offerings.
Stokes encouraged everyone to lace up their walking boots and take part in this celebration of the great outdoors. He emphasized that the festival is perfect for everyone—families with pushchairs, dog owners, and nature lovers alike. As the community comes together to enjoy these walks, it’s a wonderful chance to appreciate the natural beauty surrounding Lincolnshire.
With the festival well underway, residents are looking forward to making new memories while exploring the local paths and parks. What a fantastic way to connect with nature and each other!
