Grantham RiverCare has raised an important question: where does all the litter on the A1 come from? Ian Simmons, co-lead of Grantham RiverCare, recently observed a bin lorry that was shedding plastic bottles and packaging as it drove along. This unfortunate sight highlighted a significant issue—littering is a growing problem in our country, and sometimes it stems from careless actions during waste collection.

Simmons noted that the crew of the bin lorry likely didn’t intend to litter, but their failure to properly cover the vehicle resulted in waste being released back into the environment. This ironic situation serves as a reminder of the ongoing litter crisis we face. Fortunately, many residents are taking action to combat this issue.

As reported by LincsOnline - Grantham News, Grantham is currently participating in the Great British Spring Clean, a nationwide initiative organized by Keep Britain Tidy. This campaign encourages volunteers to join forces and clean up their local areas. The Grantham RiverCare team is one of over 50 RiverCare and BeachCare groups along the eastern coast, collectively involving around 1,000 volunteers dedicated to making a difference.

During this spring clean, volunteers in Grantham have expanded their efforts beyond the riverside. A small group from Barrowby has taken on the challenge of cleaning the slip road off the A1, a spot where litter seems to accumulate as drivers discard waste from their vehicles. Their commitment to cleaning up the area is commendable.

In another initiative, a group of five volunteers recently spent two hours clearing a stream that flows under Earlsfield Lane, which ultimately leads into the River Witham. In that short time, they collected six full bags of bottles and cans, along with some surprising finds, including four shopping trolleys, a computer, and an electric scooter.

The beautiful Belton deer park is also receiving attention from the RiverCare team, as litter from Grantham often makes its way there. The volunteers believe that maintaining a clean and pleasant environment requires proactive measures from the community.

While local authorities play a role in managing waste, it is ultimately the responsibility of volunteers to help mitigate the impact of those who litter without thought. The belief in “litter fairies” does not contribute to a cleaner community.

As the Great British Spring Clean continues, the efforts of these dedicated volunteers shine a light on the importance of community involvement in preserving our environment. It’s clear that a collective effort is essential to tackle the litter problem effectively and ensure a cleaner, more beautiful Grantham.

What are your thoughts on littering in our community? How can we work together to encourage more responsible waste disposal?
