A Lincoln mother, Charli Aitken, is grappling with fear and concern after her three-year-old son, Rudi, swallowed the contents of a toy dinosaur egg that may have contained asbestos. This alarming incident has left Charli considering legal action and questioning the safety of children's toys. The story was reported by Lincolnshire Live on April 17, 2026.

Charli, 24, purchased the Let's Dig Out Dinosaur Eggs from Smyths Toys in early December as a stocking filler for Rudi. In February, while playing at home, Rudi swallowed some of the so-called 'dinosaur sand' that came with the toy. Alarmed, Charli immediately contacted NHS 111, fearing that the material might be harmful.

Initially, Smyths Toys reassured her that the product was made from plaster of Paris and deemed 'non-toxic.' However, her relief was short-lived. Just weeks later, the company issued a product recall, revealing that testing had found some products might contain trace levels of asbestos.

Charli expressed her distress over the situation, stating that she now fears for Rudi's long-term health. She criticized Smyths Toys for their lack of empathy and accountability in handling the matter. "We bought the egg as a stocking filler for Christmas as Rudi loves dinosaurs," she shared. "I turned around, and he had taken a big spoonful of this dinosaur sand. I panicked when I saw him with his mouth full of plaster."

After contacting Smyths Toys for clarification, Charli received a £10 gift voucher but was left unsatisfied with their responses. She requested a breakdown of the ingredients, only to be told that no such list existed. This lack of transparency added to her concerns, especially given the nature of the product intended for children.

On March 23, Charli received the product recall notice, which instructed her to return the toy for a refund. The mention of asbestos in the notice sent her into a state of shock. "All I saw was 'asbestos,' and my heart dropped," she recalled. Despite signing up for updates from Smyths, she felt abandoned as she did not receive any direct communication from the company regarding the recall.

Charli's experience raises critical questions about the safety standards of children's toys and the responsibilities of manufacturers in ensuring their products are safe for young users. As parents and guardians, it is essential to remain vigilant about the toys we bring into our homes.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in the toy industry. Community members may want to discuss how to better protect children from potential hazards in toys and whether stricter regulations are needed to ensure safety in children's products.
