A notable chapter in Lincolnshire's agricultural history is closing as the Needham family prepares to disperse their celebrated herd of pedigree Charolais cattle. This heartfelt decision, described as the "end of an era," comes after decades of dedicated breeding at Hill House Farm, as reported by Lincolnshire Live.
The Needham family has been a prominent name in the farming community since they established Hill House Farm in 1890. Over five generations, they have built a legacy around their meticulous breeding practices, particularly with Charolais cattle, which they began importing to the UK in 1968. Ralph Needham, the family patriarch, pioneered the poll genetics by skillfully crossing Lincoln Red cattle with Charolais, creating a herd renowned for its quality.
Alistair Needham, a fourth-generation farmer, shared that the decision to sell the herd was not made lightly. He noted the significant labour involved in managing a herd of over 200 cattle, stating, "Breeding and managing a herd of more than 200 is very labour intensive and requires work around the clock every single day." As the family transitions to focus on arable farming, they will sell their cattle at Harrison and Hetherington’s Borderway Mart on May 9, during the annual Charolais Bull Sales.
This sale marks a historic moment, as it is the first time stock from the Cockerington herd will be offered off-farm. The auction will feature 100 pedigree poll Charolais cattle, including a diverse selection such as 54 cows with calves, 25 two-year-old heifers, and two Swedish imported stock bulls. All calves are registered pedigree and the herd is noted for being 100% polled, which is particularly appealing to breeders looking to enhance their programs.
Alistair expressed gratitude to the many customers who have supported the family throughout the years, acknowledging the strong demand for their herd’s genetics. He remarked, "It has been a very difficult decision to disperse," reflecting the emotional weight of this transition.
Before the focus on Charolais, Hill House Farm was also known for breeding Shire Horses and Lincoln Reds, showcasing the family’s long-standing commitment to quality farming.
As the Needham family embarks on this new chapter, the community is left to reflect on the legacy of the Cockerington herd and the impact it has had on Lincolnshire’s farming landscape. This transition not only signifies a change for the Needhams but also a shift in the local agricultural scene.
Residents may wonder how this change will affect the local farming community and what the future holds for Hill House Farm.
