A Lincolnshire woman is sharing her harrowing experience to raise awareness about road safety after a seemingly small mistake nearly cost her life. Ellen was traveling in the back seat of a car near Woodhall Spa when she decided to take off her seatbelt to reach for something on the floor. In that brief moment of distraction, the car veered off the road and crashed into a tree, resulting in severe injuries that left her fighting for her life.

In a video shared by Lincolnshire Police, Ellen recounted the terrifying aftermath of the crash, which took place on Stixwould Road. Her family feared the worst, believing she would be in the hospital for months and might never walk or talk again. Ellen suffered a head injury, a spinal fracture, a femur fracture, and punctured lungs, which required immediate medical intervention.

Ellen described the severity of her injuries, stating, "My lungs deflated; they got reinflated at the side of the road." After being rushed to the hospital, she was placed in an induced coma for two to three days while doctors assessed her injuries and performed multiple operations. The head injury was particularly concerning, as she had a significant gash that took a plastic surgeon over four hours to repair.

"I had a bleed on the brain, which took them a couple of days to find because it was so small but so effective," she explained. This injury prevented her from speaking for nearly a month, adding to the challenges she faced during her recovery.

Ellen spent several weeks in the hospital before being transferred to the neuro-rehabilitation ward at Lincoln County Hospital. The road to recovery was long and arduous, filled with physical and emotional hurdles. "The first year was incredibly tough. I felt so down and depressed, thinking I would never be able to do anything again," she shared.

Despite the challenges, Ellen has made significant progress in her recovery and is determined to use her experience to warn others. "If you're going to take your belt off, pull over. I was in the back, and this all happened to me. If I was driving, I wouldn't be here right now," she cautioned. Her message is clear: wearing a seatbelt is crucial for safety, and one moment of carelessness can have life-altering consequences.

Ellen’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for vigilance, even in seemingly harmless situations. As she continues to heal, her hope is that others will learn from her experience and prioritize their safety on the roads.
