A Grantham family has found a unique solution to the challenges of rising house prices, thanks to a generous idea from their grandad. As reported by Lincolnshire Live, Holly McCarthy and Sam McGurgan were eagerly anticipating the arrival of their new baby when they realised their current home was simply too small for their growing family.

Living in a rented three-bedroom house with Holly's three children, the couple faced difficulties in securing a mortgage for a larger property. Holly reflected on their cramped living conditions, stating, "It just wasn’t big enough for all of us. Lilly and Lana were sharing a bedroom while Lacey had a tiny box room."

When Holly discussed their housing predicament with her father, Paul, he proposed an unconventional solution: the family could all live together under one roof. "He said, ‘How about if we all do it together? I will sell my house and we can all live under one roof,’" Holly recalled.

After some serious discussions around the dinner table, the idea quickly became a reality. The family began searching for a suitable house and soon found their perfect match—a five-bedroom property at the Linden Homes’ Kings Newton development in Grantham. They moved into their new home on December 19, 2025.

Holly expressed her excitement about the new house, saying, "This really is our dream home. It is exactly what we wanted." The spacious kitchen and dining area were particularly appealing to her, while her dad was thrilled about having a large en suite bedroom that occupies the entire top floor.

The new living arrangement has brought joy to everyone. Holly noted, "The girls are so thrilled to get a bedroom each and a bathroom to share while we are delighted to have an en suite bedroom. Dad loves his ‘penthouse suite’ up on the top floor where he has a shower, a fridge and a kettle."

The family enjoys the flexibility of their new layout, allowing them to spend time together or retreat to their own spaces. Holly shared, "Once we have all gathered, we can stay together to watch a film or we can disappear into different rooms. The girls love spending time in their rooms and dad likes to retire upstairs to his sanctuary."

In addition to the living space, Paul and Sam are working on converting the detached garage into a games room, complete with a dart board, table football, and a TV. Paul expressed his happiness about living together, stating, "I am very self-contained up in my en suite bedroom but can engage with everyone else when I want to."

Now that he is effectively retired, Paul is excited about being present for his grandson Cole's milestones, saying, "I can’t wait to share those special moments such as his first step."

This heartwarming story highlights how families in Lincolnshire are creatively navigating the challenges of the housing market. With their new home, the McGurgan family is embracing a new chapter filled with shared experiences and cherished moments together.
