The Birchwood community is coming together to remember Jane Astbury, a cherished landlady of the Black Swan pub, who passed away at the age of 57. Tributes have poured in for Jane, who, along with her husband Gary, had been running the pub for over two decades. According to Lincolnshire Live, Jane was not just a landlady but a friend to everyone who walked through the pub doors.
Originally from Castleford, Jane and Gary met 30 years ago when Paul was working as a DJ. After a decade together, they decided to move to Lincolnshire, where they became a beloved part of the Birchwood community. Jane's health took a turn in 2025 when she experienced heart failure, followed by a lung cancer diagnosis that sadly spread. She passed away at home on March 19, after battling pneumonia following a recent hospital visit.
Gary shared how deeply Jane was loved, both by her family and the local community. He described her as someone who truly loved life, saying, "Any party she would be there dressed up." He reflected on her warmth, stating, "She was a mother to everyone in here," highlighting how she watched families grow over the years. A bingo night was recently held at the pub in her memory, celebrating her passion for the game and the joy she brought to others.
Jane's funeral took place on April 16, and Gary was moved by the outpouring of support, noting that the number of people walking behind the hearse shocked him. He mentioned how all the shops in the shopping centre closed as a mark of respect while the hearse passed.
Deborah Crow, a close friend of Jane’s, also shared her fond memories. The two women became friends in 2012 after Deborah's own pub, The Wildlife, closed. She recalled how they quickly bonded over drinks and laughter, saying, "I went in the Black Swan for a drink one sunny Saturday and left there with a new friend Jane."
Deborah reminisced about their shared love for bingo and their ladies' darts team, saying, "Jane was happiest surrounded by customers most she classed as family or close friends." She described typical nights out with Jane filled with drinking, dancing, and laughter, emphasizing that Jane was a giving soul who touched many lives.
As the Birchwood community mourns the loss of Jane Astbury, her legacy of kindness and camaraderie lives on in the hearts of those she touched. The Black Swan, now a symbol of her spirit, continues to be a gathering place for friends and family, reminding everyone of the joy she brought to their lives.
