Motorists in Lincolnshire faced significant disruptions on Friday, May 1, as the A1 was closed in both directions near Stamford following a serious collision. According to Lincolnshire Live, the closure occurred shortly after 1pm, leading to delays of up to 30 minutes and causing three miles of congestion on the approach from both directions. Emergency services, including the air ambulance, quickly arrived at the scene to manage the situation.

In addition to the A1 closure, the A158 was also affected by a jackknifed lorry in Baumber, which added to the traffic woes. Reports indicated that chickens had escaped and were wandering on the road between B1225 High Street and Hunters Lane, creating an unusual and challenging scenario for drivers in the area.

Lincolnshire Police were also on the scene of a separate incident on Beggar Hill, Scotter, which further contributed to the traffic delays. The police advised motorists to expect delays and to seek alternative routes where possible.

As the May bank holiday weekend approached, the RAC warned that it would be one of the busiest driving periods in a decade, with an estimated five million motorists expected to take to the roads. The RAC's data indicated that up to 19 million leisure trips were anticipated, leading to heavy congestion, particularly on what they dubbed 'Frantic Friday.' The peak travel times were expected to occur between 11am and 7pm, prompting the RAC to recommend that drivers leave before 10am to avoid the worst delays.

With the A1 and A158 closed, diversion routes were implemented for southbound traffic. Motorists were directed to exit the A1 at the junction with A607 Grantham and follow a series of roads through Melton Mowbray to rejoin the A606. This diversion was necessary to help alleviate some of the congestion caused by the ongoing incidents.

As the situation developed, local residents were encouraged to stay informed through live updates and traffic alerts. The combination of accidents and the busy holiday weekend created a perfect storm for traffic delays, making it essential for drivers to remain patient and vigilant on the roads.

With so many people on the move, it’s a good time for the community to come together and share their experiences. How have local drivers been managing the holiday traffic this weekend?
