The Liberal Democrats have made a significant promise to voters in North East Lincolnshire, pledging to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour if they secure election on 7 May. As reported by BBC Lincolnshire, voters will be casting their ballots to elect 15 councillors, which represents a third of the 42 seats on the North East Lincolnshire Council.
Currently, the Liberal Democrats hold three seats on the council, and group leader Nicola Aisthorpe has expressed confidence in their ability to deliver results and hold the authority accountable. Aisthorpe stated that community safety is a pressing concern for residents, noting that crime and anti-social behaviour are impacting daily life and leaving many feeling unsafe in their own neighbourhoods.
"North East Lincolnshire should be a place where people feel safe, supported, and able to get on with their lives," Aisthorpe remarked. She emphasized the need for greater investment in early intervention and opportunities for young people, aiming to prevent issues before they escalate.
In addition to addressing safety concerns, Aisthorpe highlighted the importance of reinforcing housing and planning policy. She pointed to the introduction of "selective licensing" in the East Marsh ward, a measure that emerged from Lib Dem campaigning to tackle poor housing conditions and irresponsible landlords. "The priority now is proper enforcement so it delivers real improvements," Aisthorpe said.
Recycling rates are another area where Aisthorpe sees room for improvement. She noted that while Lib Dem-led councils have achieved some of the highest recycling rates in the country, North East Lincolnshire's rates remain around 38%, which falls short of the national target of 60%.
When asked about the impact of Liberal Democrat councillors in North East Lincolnshire, Aisthorpe pointed to a fully funded plan for cleaner streets that had been approved and implemented. This initiative has reportedly reduced litter complaints by 30% and removed over 55 tonnes of waste from residential streets.
Additionally, Aisthorpe mentioned the Lib Dems' efforts to overhaul how council tax debt is managed and their work to expose unequal enforcement of dangerous parking issues across the borough. As the election approaches, the party is keen to highlight these achievements and their vision for the future.
As the community prepares for the upcoming elections, residents may be wondering how these pledges will translate into real change. What are your thoughts on the Lib Dems’ plans for North East Lincolnshire?
