Spalding High School is basking in the glow of success after two of its teams triumphed in the Lincolnshire County Cup finals, as reported by LincsOnline - Spalding News. The finals took place at Sleaford Town FC on Thursday, April 30, marking a remarkable achievement for the school’s PE department.

The Under-12s team secured their championship title with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Sir Robert Pattinson Academy from North Hykeham. Meanwhile, the Under-16s faced a nail-biting challenge against Sir William Robertson Academy, Welbourn, which culminated in a penalty shootout after a thrilling 2-2 draw. Remarkably, the U16s retained the trophy they had won the previous year.

PE teacher Amy Magnus expressed her delight at the girls' accomplishments, praising both teams for their determination and teamwork. "Wow—what a day! To have two teams progress to the Lincolnshire County Cup final is a remarkable achievement for our school, especially with both matches kicking off at the same time— it was certainly a logistical challenge for the PE department!" she said.

In the U12 match, the game was evenly poised at 0-0 at half-time, with Spalding holding the advantage in possession despite playing into the wind. Magnus noted that the second half saw the team dominate, with two well-taken goals from Emily giving them a 2-0 lead. Although their opponents managed to score late in the game, the final whistle confirmed Spalding as county champions in their very first season, a testament to the players' hard work and teamwork.

The U16s' match was equally intense. After a tense first half, where a remarkable save from goalkeeper Freya kept Spalding in the game, the team found themselves down 1-0 at the break. However, they showcased tremendous resilience in the second half, equalising and then taking a 2-1 lead with a perfectly executed corner from Lexi. As the match neared its conclusion, the opposition equalised, leading to a dramatic penalty shootout.

After both teams had taken five penalties, the score was tied at three each, with Freya stepping up again to make crucial saves. Spalding clinched the title in sudden death, marking the third time this team has emerged victorious in their county cup finals. Magnus reflected on the achievement, saying, "What a game to mark the end of an incredible five years of football for the year 11s, being crowned three times county champions, national runners up, and many more team and individual achievements. They have been an absolute pleasure to coach and set a very hard footprint for the younger years to follow."

The success of these teams not only highlights the talent within Spalding High School but also fosters a spirit of community pride and support for local sports. As the school celebrates these victories, it raises the question of how local residents can further support youth sports initiatives in the area.
