A serious incident on a Lincolnshire road has raised concerns about driver behavior and road safety. According to Lincolnshire Live, 22-year-old Finley Nottingham was sentenced for causing serious injury after performing an illegal U-turn that resulted in a motorcyclist sustaining multiple fractures.
The incident occurred on July 2, 2025, as Nottingham was travelling along the Eastern bypass. He was headed towards the Greetwell roundabout when he discovered that the route to his home in Fiskerton was closed due to roadworks. Instead of continuing on the bypass, Nottingham attempted to make a U-turn at a junction leading to Hawthorn Road, which is only accessible from the southbound carriageway.
Ignoring the prohibition sign against U-turns, Nottingham pulled to the left side of the carriageway. Meanwhile, Lewis Murray, a 24-year-old motorcyclist riding behind him, believed that Nottingham was yielding to let him pass. Tragically, as Nottingham executed his turn, Murray had no time to react, leading to a devastating collision.
Murray was thrown from his bike and suffered multiple serious injuries, including fractures to his left arm, shoulder, wrist, fingers, and back. Since the incident, he has undergone extensive surgery and has been unable to work, significantly impacting his life.
Nottingham, who resides in Sheffield, faced the consequences of his actions at Lincoln Magistrates' Court. He received a six-month custodial sentence, suspended for 12 months, along with 150 hours of unpaid work. Additionally, he was ordered to pay £272 in court charges and banned from driving for 18 months, after which he must complete an extended re-test to regain his driving privileges.
The investigation into the collision was conducted by the Serious Collision Investigation Unit of Lincolnshire Police. Witnesses provided crucial accounts of the event, including one who noted that Nottingham's vehicle turned towards the centre of the carriageway without signaling. Initially, Nottingham claimed he was avoiding an object in the road and suggested that the motorcyclist was at fault for attempting to overtake in a 'stupid place.' However, his story changed during questioning, leading to doubts about his credibility.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to road regulations and the potential consequences of reckless driving. As the community reflects on this case, it is essential to consider how such behaviors can be addressed to enhance road safety for everyone.
