Residents of Grantham can expect some changes at the Wharf Road multi-storey car park as South Kesteven District Council (SKDC) initiates a significant £300,000 repair project. According to Lincolnshire Live, the council has awarded a contract worth £298,948.12 to Rio Asphalt and Paving Co Ltd to resurface level four of the car park. This work is part of a larger phased programme aimed at addressing the maintenance backlog that has accumulated over the past three years.
The first phase of this maintenance effort was completed in November, focusing on resurfacing level three. At a council meeting held on May 5, cabinet member for property and public engagement, Richard Cleaver, expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far. He noted that the level four contract marks the next step in the ongoing remedial works. "We’re still working through it – slowly but very surely – and I’m pleased to say this is all going ahead as planned," he stated.
The car park has been showing signs of deterioration, with both the surface and the underlying concrete structure requiring urgent attention. The council plans to start the resurfacing work in June, and it is expected to take up to six weeks to complete. During this period, there may be instances where the car park will need to close entirely to ensure the safety of both workers and motorists.
SKDC has assured the community that they will make every effort to minimize disruption. If full closures are necessary, the council will provide advance notice to inform residents and visitors, along with details about alternative parking options.
In addition to the resurfacing work, the council is also taking steps to empower its deputy chief executive and section 151 officer, along with the cabinet member for property, to award contracts for general repair works across all levels of the car park. The tender process for these additional repairs has been opened, with bids expected to be assessed later this month.
As the project moves forward, it highlights the council's commitment to maintaining essential infrastructure in Grantham. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the developments and any potential impacts on their daily routines.
