In a heartwarming tale of friendship and resilience, two women who met in Lincoln County Hospital are gearing up to tackle an ultramarathon together. Kay Lawson, 47, and Gemma Latham, 43, formed a bond during their hospital stay in October 2025, where they shared their dreams of running despite their health challenges. Their story was recently highlighted by BBC Lincolnshire, showcasing the power of connection in unexpected circumstances.
Kay was in the hospital preparing for gall bladder surgery when she turned to Gemma, who was recovering from a broken pelvis. While lying in their beds, Kay expressed her disappointment about missing the Lincoln half marathon that day. Gemma, who had also intended to run the same event, made a promise that they would one day run an ultramarathon together, a commitment that has now brought them to the Trent Valley Ultra Marathon on May 16.
Speaking on BBC Radio Lincolnshire, Kay described how their week together in the hospital allowed them to encourage one another. She admired Gemma's fighting spirit and determination, which inspired her to push through her own recovery. "I was like 'Oh I don't know', but here we are doing one, so that's that," Kay reflected on their journey.
Gemma echoed this sentiment, saying, "I'm a firm believer in everything happening when it's supposed to and paths crossing when you need them the most." The two women quickly connected over their shared experiences and outlooks on life, forming a friendship that has blossomed into a joint goal.
Kay's health challenges didn't end with her gall bladder surgery. She was also diagnosed with diverticulitis and a degenerative colon, but these obstacles only strengthened her resolve. After her discharge, she was eager to lace up her trainers again and even completed a 10k during the Lanzarote Marathon in December. "Every time I wanted to walk and quit, I thought 'go on it was only a few weeks ago you were in hospital dreaming you were fit enough to run, so get your bottom round'," she shared.
The Trent Valley Ultra Marathon spans an impressive 32 miles (about 51km), a daunting distance for anyone, especially for someone who has never run that far before. Kay admitted, "I've never done that distance and I imagine it will be extremely painful. I'm not a runner; I was always the kid in school who got picked last for sports." Despite her fears, she is determined to finish, stating, "Every marathon I do, I'm last, but some people run for the time they have been doing it."
In addition to their personal challenge, Kay has set up a JustGiving page to raise funds for the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance Charity, further demonstrating their commitment to community support.
As the ultramarathon approaches, Kay and Gemma's story serves as a reminder of the strength that can come from friendship and shared experiences. Their journey from hospital beds to the starting line of an ultramarathon is inspiring many in the Lincoln community.
